Google buys YouTube

By Simon on October 11th, 2006. Published in Opinion.

I think by know we all know that Google has bought YouTube. I will not make this post to a long discussion about this. I just want to share some of my thoughts about it.

Personally I think its bad news that Google buys YouTube. What we see know is one big company taking over other popular sites to gain more power. Google is getting a bigger a bigger monopoly on the Internet and like we all know monopolies are never good for the users or buyers.

I know Google might help YouTube get better features and all kinds of stuff but I still wanted to see YouTube as an independent choice towards Google Video.

No matter what a lot of you Google fan boys and girls out there think I believe Google is slowly changing from a cosy and friendly company to one of those big companies that can step over dead bodies to reach their goals (like Exxon, Microsoft etc). So you want evidence, huh? Okay, one of the biggest changes recently in Google’s culture is that they (like Yahoo) have censored their search engine results for traffic coming from China. Will Google now censor certain videos for YouTube’s Chinese users? No one knows, but it could happen.

Monopolies are bad no matter who is running it.

  • How does Google buying YouTube make it a monopoly? Google isn’t over-stepping any bounds here; they purchased a popular site for a ridiculous amount of money. Big whoop. They aren’t forcing anyone to use YouTube—it’s still free to the public, and if you don’t like who runs it you can still choose from one of the many other online video services floating around.

Google’s policy has always been, “don’t do evil.” It’s part of their appeal. The minute they lose that is the moment people will lose faith in the internet. JSYK, Google *didn’t* censor search results at first, and for the most part they still don’t; the change occurred as a response to pressure from outside parties threatening legal action if certain content wasn’t pulled. The filtering that they do at google.cn is at the request of China itself. It has nothing to do with them.

  • Great article! I also think Google is on their way of becoming a huge evil company.

But I hope that the China story was just a bad call…
