Clicksor has launched an online advertising marketplace

Posted by Simon on April 28th, 2007 in Clicksor | No Comments

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usThe team behind Clicksor has launched a new online advertising marketplace. They call it AdPreference. AdPreference is still in Beta but you can sign up both as an advertiser and advertiser.

AdPreference is not similair to Clicksor. It’s basically works just the same as AdBrite’s Interstitial ad. The differences between the AdPreference interstitial ad and AdBrite’s interstitial ad are that you will be re-directed back to the publisher page after 10 seconds, you can also click a “skip me” button. AdPreference also shows just an ad and not your site like AdBrite does. This has both its downsides and upsides.

If you are already using Clicksor you might want to check AdPreference out. If not, just go with AdBrite.

AOL copies the Yahoo Website

Posted by Simon on April 27th, 2007 in Web Design | No Comments

This is just low. Really low. Lower than Glocalnet (only people from Sweden will understand that one). AOL with their big budget will soon launch AOL.com 3.0 with a new website design. And guess what? Instead of making their own website design they go and copy Yahoo!’s brand new website design.

You can compare the two designs and be the judge. Check out AOL 3.0 Beta and the Yahoo! homepage.

Newsvine Relaunches… Announcing Evergreen

Posted by Simon on April 25th, 2007 in Social Media | No Comments

My favourite social news media site, Newsvine.com, has been “relaunched” today!

Call it a redesign. Call it Newsvine 2.0. Call it whatever you want, but today Newsvine is proud to announce the first major overhaul of our site since launching a little more than a year ago. It’s an exciting thing for the team and for the now 600,000 people who visit the site every month because it not only provides a hugely enhanced front page but also showcases a lot of the great technology we’ve been building behind the scenes over the last several months.

The biggest change you will notice is the front page. You can now add modules and boxes and all kinds of things in a true web 2.0 spirit. You decide how you want the front page to look like. This is great because I know a lot of people, including me, who have complained that the Newsvine front page has been too much centred on USA and their local news.

Other new features include:

  • Modules!
  • Local Headlines and Weather
  • Newsvine Live
  • The News in Pictures
  • Newsvis
  • External RSS Feeds
  • Newsvine Group Showcase
  • Top Seeds from Source
  • Super Widescreen

The last feature there called “Super Widescreen” is something users with big screens will love (and yet again something that includes me). It let’s you make the front page bigger in width to “whopping 1300 pixels of width”. Lovely!

Why too many little icons can easily distract your visitors

Posted by Simon on April 24th, 2007 in Social Media | 1 Comment

Neil Patel on pronetadvertising.com talks about how too many social bookmarking icons will confuse and distract your readers.

I guess the question is, why shouldn’t you be giving tons of options to your website visitors? It may seem like a good idea at first, but your ever so curious visitors will end up clicking on random buttons which will take them to sites that they are not familiar with and then they will not bookmark your content. Even your most tech savvy readers don’t have accounts at most of these social sites, so why drive them to sites where they will not bookmark your content.

The blog post is really basic common sense. So if you feel you have too many icons go read it! But, before that I would just like to add one thing. If you use the AddThis bookmark and feed buttons your readers and visitors can easily choose which social bookmark site they want to use. They just need to choose the “Please don’t ask me every time” option.

Create stripes textures easily

Posted by Simon on April 23rd, 2007 in Softwares and Tools | No Comments

This is one of those funny but pretty pointless tools out there. (Another one was the “Create a Web 2.0 Logo” tool (too bad that site is down now).) With this tool you can create stripes textures to use on your websites or as a pattern in Photoshop.

Answer Tips

Answer Tips, Webmasters, bloggers, you can now add an answer tips box to your site that allows users to get information of any word located on your web pages just by double clicking. A box will open with information about that word plus more if they desire. It can be installed by simply inserting the html code into your template. I have installed it on my site, FREE PIMS and now the question; is this a good idea or not?

Forget Alexa–There are better tools.

Posted by Ben on April 20th, 2007 in Opinion | 1 Comment

You’ve probably heard of Ron Hornbaker’s Statsaholic (formerly Alexaholic).

You probably know that the name change was forced by Alexa (Amazon), who didn’t like the fact that (i) the service was getting popular and (ii) Alexaholic has Alexa in it.

Okay, makes sense… right? Not really. Alexa is now blasting the same person they praised just over a year ago!

They’ve now SUED Ron! Crazy! This Scribd doc from Mashable has the actual court document.

He got rid of the Alexa… he complied. Now they sue him anyway.

Now, just a few days ago, Alexa announced that they’d be getting rid of their current API for graph use in favor of “widgets” that includes an AdBrite BritePic advertisement at the top. Ugh.

Many people have called for a boycott of Alexa. Well, I’m joining it. Who needs Alexa? Their data is blatantly wrong half the time anyway.

You may be wondering–who would take the place of Alexa? Here’s a roundup of the major competitors at this point.
