Forget Alexa–There are better tools.

Posted by Ben on April 20th, 2007 in Opinion | 1 Comment

You’ve probably heard of Ron Hornbaker’s Statsaholic (formerly Alexaholic).

You probably know that the name change was forced by Alexa (Amazon), who didn’t like the fact that (i) the service was getting popular and (ii) Alexaholic has Alexa in it.

Okay, makes sense… right? Not really. Alexa is now blasting the same person they praised just over a year ago!

They’ve now SUED Ron! Crazy! This Scribd doc from Mashable has the actual court document.

He got rid of the Alexa… he complied. Now they sue him anyway.

Now, just a few days ago, Alexa announced that they’d be getting rid of their current API for graph use in favor of “widgets” that includes an AdBrite BritePic advertisement at the top. Ugh.

Many people have called for a boycott of Alexa. Well, I’m joining it. Who needs Alexa? Their data is blatantly wrong half the time anyway.

You may be wondering–who would take the place of Alexa? Here’s a roundup of the major competitors at this point.

The new phpBB.com Design

What do you think of the new website design of phpBB.com?

The new phpBB.com Design

Personally I have mixed feelings about it. I loved the old subsilver design and this one doesn’t really “do it” for me. But it’s a nice design and I believe it’s a lot easier to navigate the site now. What do you think?

The Battle of the Videos

Posted by Simon on March 15th, 2007 in Opinion | 1 Comment

YouTube is having a hard time. Recently Turkey blocked YouTube and now Viacom sues YouTube for one billion dollar for “copyright crimes”.

Viacom is a company that owns several different channels such as MTV and Comedy Central.

The question is that why Viacom didn’t arranged a license agreement with YouTube like BBC, NBC and Universal already have done? Is it in a silly attempt to drive users to their own little video community?

How much have you made or donated from PayPerPost?

Posted by Simon on March 13th, 2007 in Make Money, Opinion | 1 Comment

I talked about PayPerPost.com in a previous post called “Big News at PayPerPost?” where I shortly explained that PayPerPost is a blog marketing program for bloggers and advertisers.

A few blog friends of mine have nagged me about joining PayPerPost for a few weeks now as it apparently have been very successful for them. But I have always said no because I thought that it was like lying for your readers if you posted paid posts just for the money. But my friends won, I eventually signed up for a PayPerPost. Stop right there! Don’t think for a second that the dark and greedy side has won over me and that I only post paid posts and articles now and that I lie and cheat on you. I actually realised that PayPerPost offered a few topics that I was planning on writing about anyways and that my post could be negative or good. So I could basically tell you the reader what the site or product that I was getting paid to blog about had for kind of downsides and still getting paid. Okay, so maybe you don’t care about the ethical questions about getting paid for posting. That’s fine too, I still like you. :)
So how much money has I made from PayPerPost so far? Well I haven’t really made any money yet. I have posted a total of three articles for a total worth of $65.00. But only one of them has been approved so far and I won’t get paid for that one until about 30 days. It seems it take a long time until you get your posts approved, but so far so good.

PayPerPost offers two different ways to get paid. One way is that you get all the money yourself. The second option you have is to donate your money to charity (You can also just donate small amounts of your money to charity). I really like the idea about this. But unfortunately PayPerPost only offer two different charities, American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. But what if I want to donate to Greenpeace or another environmental organisation? PayPerPost should really add more charities to the list. If they did I could be able to donate more and on a regular basis.

So my question for you: How much have you made or donated from PayPerPost?

Why THIS is the time for YOUR innovative idea.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I certainly have. With the sudden growth of Web 2.0, there have been some really *great* websites and services being pushed out to us.

Let me give you some examples.

Big News at PayPerPost?

Posted by Simon on March 10th, 2007 in Make Money, Opinion | 1 Comment

PayPerPost.com created a lot of buzz in the blog world when it was released. If you don’t know what it is here is a very short explanation: PayPerPost or PPP as it might be called on a blogs is actually an online advertising company that pay you as a publisher and blogger write blog posts about something that their advertisers want. It can be all from pet related stories to IP phones and websites. In fewer words: You get paid per blog post and advertisers can increase site traffic via your blog post.

Now PayPerPost is planning on introducing “some big news in the near future”. So what can these “big news” be all about? Well a rumour wouldn’t be called a rumour if it wasn’t one. Personally I have no idea what they are planning on releasing but here are some of my ideas that I would think would make sense (remember that you heard it from me first if it all turns out to be true :P):

PayPerPodcast
At the moment PayPerPost is only accepting blog posts. Something that would be possible and really interesting and useful would be if they started accepting podcasts. Ordinary blogs are so ordinary nowadays and podcasts is just so web 2.0. This would also be a great possibility to earn some real money for podcasters.

PayPerVideo
This would be something similar to the PayPerPodcast but for video bloggers. I do think that it’s more possible that the podcast thing will turn out to be one of the “big news”. This video area is still too young. Maybe we will see something like this in a year or two.

The Internet is threaten by collapse

Posted by Simon on March 7th, 2007 in Interviews, Opinion | No Comments

IT-expert Jon Lindén from Procera Networks says in an article from DN.se (a swedish newspaper) that the capacity of the Internet must be upgraded. Lindén thinks it needs some major upgrading this year or the Internet will collapse.

-There is over one billion users and it’s the video services (like YouTube) that grows the most and they consume unbelievable much bandwidth, says Jon Lindén.

Last time the capacity of the Internet was upgraded was in 2000. Back then there was no one who believed that the technical development would come so fast and consume so much bandwidth. There needs some major upgrades in the two coming years. These upgrades will cost a lot of money and Jon Lindén thinks users like you and me will need to help pay for the upgrades in some way or another.

Turkey blocks YouTube

A court in Turkey has decided that the very popular site YouTube should be blocked from Turkey. Why you might ask? Because some videos on YouTube insult Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey and its first President.

People who try to access YouTube in Turkey get’s a message in turkish and english that refer to the courts decision.

And the government in Turkey wonder why so few people in Europe (EU) want Turkey to join the European Union
